Because of its achievements and influence in this research field, the institute was appraised as one of the higher educational enterprises with a key discipline in China in 1988. In 1995, it became the State Liberal Arts Base for personnel training, teaching and research.In 1999, according to the requirements of Ministry of Education, and under the reorganization of the university, the institute is separated from the College of History and Culture, and resumed its identity as the independent Institute of Chinese Modern History. The research emphasis of institute maintains three directions: Chinese modern political history, Chinese modern economic history, and history of Chinese modern ideology and culture. It also includes two research centers, namely Research Center for the History of Chamber of Commerce, Research Center for the History of Chinese Christian Colleges.

In order to strengthen its research, the institute has invited Prof. Zhou Jiming at Hubei university as a full-time professor, Prof. Luo Zhitian at Sichuan University, Prof. Sang Bing at Zhongshan University, and Prof. Yu Heping and Prof. Wang Qisheng from the Academy of Chinese Social Sciences as part-time professors. They will work together to undertake the distinguished scientific research projects, so as to produce significant research results, and to complete the task for the establishment of a key research base at a national level.
